Intensive Residential Treatment

SOUND’s Intensive Residential Treatment (IRT) program provides specialized care and support in a residential setting for individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD). This program is designed to provide comprehensive support and stabilization for individuals with IDD living in community settings such as Adult Family Homes (AFHs) or assisted living facilities. IRT is an outpatient mental health benefit provided through managed care organizations.

Who these services are for

IRT at SOUND is specifically tailored to individuals with IDD, including conditions such as autism, cerebral palsy, Down Syndrome, Fragile X Syndrome, and others, who also have complex mental health needs and are transitioning from state hospitals or long-term hospitalizations. These individuals may struggle to maintain stability in community settings like AFHs or assisted living facilities and for them to be successful in these settings, require intensive, specialized support.

Approach to care

SOUND’s approach to IRT is rooted in person-centered care and a holistic understanding of an individual’s biopsychosocial needs. SOUND employs evidence-based practices and a strengths-based model that focuses on enhancing adaptive behaviors and improving quality of life. The IRT program offers intensive wraparound mental health care services.

SOUND integrates elements from Assertive Community Treatment (ACT), focusing on recovery-based treatment while promoting stability, safety, and community integration. SOUND emphasizes a team-based approach, including dedicated prescribers, registered nurses, mental health providers, and peer counselors. These professionals work collaboratively to deliver individualized care that includes medication management and primary mental health services tailored to the unique needs of each person.

Goals

The goal of IRT is to support individuals in stabilizing their mental health, improve their overall well-being, and successfully transition them from hospitals to less intensive community settings, or to enable them to remain in an AFH.  SOUND IRT aims to empower individuals by building skills and resilience necessary in both the person and the support system for long-term success and independence.

Locations

IRT is provided within community settings such as AFHs or assisted living facilities in King, Pierce, and South Snohomish Counties. This ensures that individuals with IDD have access to the specialized care they need in their local communities, facilitating smoother transitions and ongoing support.
